I believe research has the greatest impact when it is shared. Throughout my career, I have enjoyed communicating science with a wide range of audiences — from presenting new research at international conferences to delivering conservation workshops in remote communities, engaging school students, contributing to public events and working with the media to make ecological research accessible beyond academia.
Presenting research provides an opportunity not only to share new findings, but also to exchange ideas, build collaborations and receive valuable feedback from researchers working across disciplines. During my PhD I have presented my work at international conferences spanning marine pollution, ecotoxicology and conservation biology.
Throughout my time in Panama, I worked closely with local communities to support environmental education and community-based conservation initiatives. Working alongside Panama Wildlife Conservation, I delivered interactive workshops in schools surrounding Cerro Hoya National Park, introducing students to the region's biodiversity, sea turtle conservation and the importance of protecting threatened ecosystems. These experiences reinforced the value of making ecological research accessible and relevant to the communities living alongside wildlife.
Beyond classroom outreach, I also contributed to community-led conservation initiatives through citizen science. Working with local residents, I conducted interviews to introduce a monitoring programme for the endangered great green macaw, encouraging community members to record sightings and geotag nesting locations using a mobile application. By combining local ecological knowledge with citizen science, the initiative aimed to generate baseline information for future monitoring and conservation of the Great Green Macaw, while enabling communities to play an active role in documenting local biodiversity.
During the 19th Conference of the Parties (CoP19) to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), held in Panama City, I worked with Panama Wildlife Conservation to coordinate an educational outreach programme involving three local schools. Through a series of interactive workshops, students explored topics including biodiversity conservation, illegal wildlife trade, climate change and the role of international agreements in protecting threatened species.
The programme culminated in a public parade through Panama City, where students proudly displayed artwork, banners and conservation messages alongside representatives from conservation organisations and the wider community. Bringing young people into the conversation surrounding a major international conservation conference demonstrated how global environmental policy can be connected with local communities, fostering a sense of stewardship and encouraging the next generation to engage with biodiversity conservation.
During my internship with Coiba AIP, I participated in a science diplomacy programme led by SENACYT (Panama's National Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation). The programme brought together science diplomats from across Latin America to explore how scientific research can support international cooperation in addressing shared environmental challenges, including biodiversity conservation and climate change.
As part of the programme, I presented my PhD research on sea turtle pollution and discussed the ecological importance of Coiba National Park and the Tropical Eastern Pacific Marine Corridor. I also led a snorkelling expedition within the UNESCO World Heritage Site, introducing delegates to its exceptional marine biodiversity and highlighting the importance of protecting one of the Eastern Tropical Pacific's most significant marine ecosystems.
The experience demonstrated how scientific research can inform international dialogue and strengthen collaboration across national boundaries. It reinforced my appreciation for the role of scientists not only as researchers, but also as communicators and contributors to evidence-informed environmental policy.
Following the publication of my research on systemic microplastic bioaccumulation in sea turtles, I was invited to join the Ocean News Podcast to discuss the study and its wider implications. During the interview, I explored how microplastics move through biological systems, why understanding contaminant exposure is important for wildlife conservation, and the challenges of translating complex scientific research into messages that are accessible to a broader audience.
Participating in the podcast reinforced the importance of engaging with audiences beyond academia and highlighted the role of accessible science communication in raising awareness of emerging environmental issues.

At the University of Manchester’s Wild Researchers’ Night, I introduced members of the public to my research on microplastics and sea turtles through informal discussion and interactive engagement. The event provided an opportunity to translate complex ideas into accessible conversations and connect marine pollution research with environmental issues relevant to everyday life.
Whether speaking with researchers, policymakers, communities, schoolchildren or public audiences, I aim to make scientific evidence clear, relevant and capable of inspiring meaningful engagement with the natural world.
